Mentoring philosophy
The ultimate goal is to encourage personal and authentic learning on the part of the mentee. Mentors will take the time to understand their mentees and to help them process their challenges so that learning occurs and even continues after the mentorship engagement.
When mentees experience learning that helps them to address their challenges and concerns, there is a greater likelihood that problems will remain solved. In addition, mentees will have the capacity to address similar problems if they arise in the future.
Though there will inevitably be references to the past, the focus should always be on the FUTURE.
Empathetic Listening
Mentors must listen carefully and empathetically as they dialogue with mentees. This is the best way to gather the information that is relevant to the specific circumstances and challenges being faced by the mentee.
You will then be better able to identify the specific approaches and conversations that are needed to promote the development of coping skills and overall personal development for the mentee.
Starting Right
At Jalawelo we promote a culture of authenticity in our relationships with mentees.
Authentic relationships happen when the following conditions are in place:
When mentor and mentee feel free to just be themselves
When mentor and mentee choose to engage in open and honest conversations
When there is authenticity, then trust can be forged. Without authenticity, there is a weak basis for trust, and, without trust, the relationship will not produce the results the mentor or the mentee is seeking.
