Useful information
Building trust
Here are some tips for building trust with your mentee:
Do what you say you are going to do.
Be clear about expectations.
Take responsibility for your mistakes.
Show genuine concern for your mentees and try to understand their hopes and dreams.
Go to the source of problems and deal with it at the source instead of communicating through intermediaries.
If you break trust with your mentee (even if they believe you did and you believe otherwise), try to quickly work out any misunderstandings by your actions and not just your words.
Journaling
You may want to keep a record of the following:
1. Your interactions with your mentee;
2. Your reflections about your mentee's progress;
3. Any recommendations you may have;
4. Any thought you may want to share in the online mentor meet-up.
Things to talk about (examples)
Life in general: How are things going; How is the program progressing.
Social/Hobbies: Favorite movies, books; Family; Friends; Foods; Special experiences; Sports; Peer relationships.
Academic/Career: IEDP progress; Career aspirations; Challenges; Next steps
Do not bring up personal topics unless your mentee introduces them.
